The Aachen Cathedral Treasury preserves one of the most important collections of religious and imperial objects north of the Alps, gathered around the church founded by Charlemagne about 800. Its treasures include the gem-encrusted Cross of Lothair, an ornate reliquary bust of Charlemagne, and a marble sarcophagus, testifying to the city's role as a coronation seat of German kings. Housed beside the UNESCO-listed cathedral, the treasury allows close study of medieval goldsmithing and imperial ceremony.
