A ribbon of sand 98 kilometres long and in places barely 400 metres wide separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea, shared between Lithuania and Russia's Kaliningrad region. People have lived on the spit since prehistory, yet drifting dunes have repeatedly threatened to bury their villages; today's landscape of pine forest, open dunes and fishing settlements is the fruit of centuries of deliberate planting and stabilisation. UNESCO inscribed the Curonian Spit as a cultural landscape in 2000.
