The Curonian Spit is a 98-kilometre sand bar that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea, shared between Russia's Kaliningrad exclave and Lithuania and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Russian section contains large dune fields, among them the Efa Dune with its panoramic viewing platform, as well as fishing villages and extensive pine forests. The spit's narrow width — in places less than 400 metres — allows visitors to walk between the open Baltic shore and the calm lagoon within minutes.
