Tucked into an Alpine meadow, the pilgrimage church of Wies is a burst of pure joy in stucco and paint. The architect Dominikus Zimmermann built it between 1745 and 1754 as a masterpiece of Bavarian Rococo — light, exuberant and colourful — and its improbable survival amid green pastures only heightens the effect. UNESCO inscribed the Pilgrimage Church of Wies as a World Heritage Site in 1983.
