A pilgrimage church standing in an alpine meadow in the foothills of the Ammergau Alps near Steingaden, the Wieskirche is considered the masterpiece of the Bavarian Rococo movement and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its exterior is relatively plain, making the elaborately frescoed and gilded interior — the work of Dominikus and Johann Baptist Zimmermann — a surprise of exuberant colour and form. Natural light from the large windows animates the ceiling fresco throughout the day.
