Walls of glass wrapping a steel frame, corners left daringly open: when Walter Gropius designed the Fagus factory in Alfeld around 1910, he pointed the way to modern architecture. Built to make the wooden lasts used in shoemaking and still working today, the ten-building complex anticipated the Bauhaus and reshaped industrial design across Europe and North America. UNESCO inscribed the Fagus Factory as a World Heritage Site in 2011.
