The Ottonian golden age of Old Saxony survives in two churches at Hildesheim. St Michael's, built between 1010 and 1020 on a strikingly symmetrical double-apse plan, keeps its painted wooden ceiling, while St Mary's Cathedral guards the celebrated bronze doors and column cast for Bishop Bernward — supreme examples of Romanesque art under the Holy Roman Empire. UNESCO inscribed St Mary's Cathedral and St Michael's Church at Hildesheim as a World Heritage Site in 1985.
