Legend dates Rome's founding by Romulus to 753 BC, and nearly three millennia of power lie layered in its historic centre — the Forums and the Pantheon, Trajan's Column, the great mausoleums of Augustus and Hadrian, and the churches and palaces of the popes. Inscribed in 1980 and enlarged a decade later to the walls of Urban VIII, the World Heritage Site is shared between Italy and the Holy See, whose extraterritorial properties and the basilica of San Paolo Fuori le Mura fall within the listing.
