Salta, Salta Province

Salta is a colonial city in the northwestern Argentine Andes, whose well-preserved Baroque city centre around the Plaza 9 de Julio earned it the popular designation La Linda — the beautiful. The Tren a las Nubes railway, climbing to 4,220 metres at the La Polvorilla viaduct in the puna altiplano, is one of the highest operating railways in the world. The surrounding valleys of the Quebrada del Toro and the multicoloured rock formations of the Quebrada de Humahuaca draw significant archaeological and photographic interest.
