Manaus is the capital of Amazonas state and the main gateway into the western Brazilian Amazon, positioned at the confluence of the Negro and Solimões rivers. Its most celebrated landmark is the Teatro Amazonas, a European-style opera house completed in 1896 during the rubber boom, with a painted dome and Carrara marble interior that stand in vivid contrast to the surrounding forest. The Meeting of the Waters phenomenon, where the dark Negro and the sandy Solimões flow side by side without mixing for several kilometres, is visible by boat downriver from the port.
