A colonial town in Santander considered one of the best-preserved colonial settlements in Colombia, with cobblestone streets, single-story sandstone buildings, and a cathedral constructed entirely of locally quarried yellow-toned stone. The town sits on a plateau above the Suárez River canyon with views extending into the dry canyon landscape of the Chicamocha watershed. The Camino Real footpath to Güane, an ancient Guane indigenous trail, descends from the edge of town through cactus scrubland.
