A river town in the Santander department situated where the Fonce and Chicamocha rivers converge, San Gil is the primary base for whitewater rafting, paragliding, and caving in Colombia. The nearby Chicamocha Canyon, one of the deepest in South America, is visible from a mesa road with a cable-car traversal across the gorge. The colonial village of Barichara, with its perfectly preserved sandstone architecture, lies 22 kilometers northwest.
