A colonial city on Peru's northern coast, Trujillo's historic center contains one of the best-preserved concentrations of Spanish-colonial mansions with elaborately carved wooden balconies and painted facades. The city also serves as the access point for Chan Chan — the largest pre-Columbian city in South America — and the Moche pyramids of Huaca del Sol and Huaca de la Luna six kilometers from the city center. The surrounding La Libertad coast supports one of the oldest surfing traditions in South America.
