An active stratovolcano rising to 5,023 meters above the Pastaza River valley, Tungurahua has been in a persistent phase of eruptive activity since 1999 with periodic ash falls and pyroclastic events. The mountain is photographed at night from Baños when summit glow or eruption columns are visible against the sky. The surrounding landscape of ravines and cloud forest reflects the volcano's combined destructive and geothermal influence on local ecology.
