A gateway town at the foot of the active Tungurahua volcano, Baños sits at the transition between the Andean highlands and the Amazon basin where the Pastaza River begins its descent through a series of waterfalls. The Ruta de las Cascadas connects several significant falls including Pailón del Diablo, a powerful multi-tiered drop visible from a short trail. The town is also known for thermal baths fed by volcanic mineral springs.
