Luminous Lagoon near Falmouth in Trelawny Parish is one of the world's brightest bioluminescent bays, where disturbance of the water causes dense concentrations of Pyrodinium bahamense dinoflagellates to emit a vivid blue-green glow. Night boat tours allow passengers to observe fish leaving glowing wakes and to swim in the illuminated water. The high concentration of organisms is sustained by the lagoon's unique mix of fresh river water and salt water, and the surrounding mangroves filtering the outflow.
