Cockpit Country is a plateau of deeply eroded limestone in central-western Jamaica forming a corrugated terrain of rounded, forested sinkholes and ridges—a classic example of tropical karst topography locally called 'the Land of Look Behind'. The region provided refuge to Maroon communities who resisted British colonial control in the 18th century, and the descendants of those Maroon fighters still maintain autonomous communities at Accompong. The closed-canopy forest shelters the highest density of endemic species on the island.
