Volcán Barú, at 3,474 metres, is the highest point in Panama and the only place in the country where, on a clear day, both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts are simultaneously visible. The dormant stratovolcano is protected within Barú Volcano National Park and its slopes support cloud forest, páramo, and sub-alpine scrub with rare resplendent quetzal populations. Most ascents begin before midnight to reach the summit for sunrise.
