Built on a leveled mountaintop above the Oaxacan valley floor, Monte Albán was the capital of the Zapotec civilization for over a thousand years. The main plaza is bordered by massive platform temples aligned to astronomical events, and the carved danzantes slabs depicting captive figures are among the oldest known political propaganda in the Americas. Sunset from the north platform offers a sweeping panorama across three converging valleys.
