The Cañón del Sumidero is a deep gorge carved by the Grijalva River in central Chiapas, with near-vertical basalt walls rising over a thousand meters from the river surface. Boat tours navigate the canyon floor past massive walls hung with moss formations and a Christmas-tree-shaped waterfall formed by mineral deposits. Crocodiles rest on the riverbanks, and frigatebirds and vultures circle overhead.
