Kejimkujik protects the interior Acadian heartland of Nova Scotia, a landscape of smooth, glacier-polished slate lakeshore, mature hardwood ridges, and meandering rivers shaped by the Mi'kmaw people for thousands of years. The park's shorelines and portage routes contain extensive petroglyphs carved into the bedrock by Mi'kmaw artists over centuries, representing the largest known concentration of Mi'kmaw rock art in Canada. The park is also a designated Dark Sky Preserve and hosts some of Atlantic Canada's clearest stargazing conditions.
