The Niagara Escarpment is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve extending 725 kilometres from Niagara Falls to the tip of the Bruce Peninsula and beyond, formed by the differential erosion of dolomite and limestone over ancient shale. Its cliff faces and talus slopes support ancient white cedar trees, some exceeding 1,000 years of age, that grow in near-vertical rock crevices inaccessible to deer browse. The Bruce Trail follows the escarpment's full length, making it Canada's oldest and longest marked footpath.
