Aulavik National Park on Banks Island in the western Canadian Arctic preserves the world's highest density of muskoxen along the Thomsen River, one of the most northerly navigable rivers on earth. The park is accessible only by charter aircraft from Inuvik and sees fewer than a hundred visitors annually. The broad river valley and surrounding uplands support wolf, Arctic fox, and nesting sites of numerous migratory waterfowl in a landscape untouched by roads or permanent infrastructure.
