Drumheller sits in the Red Deer River Valley where erosion has carved an extensive badlands landscape of hoodoos, coulees, and exposed Cretaceous sedimentary rock. The area is among the world's most productive dinosaur fossil sites, with the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology — one of the largest palaeontology museums on earth — situated 6 kilometres north of town. Sunrise and sunset dramatically accentuate the colour banding of the canyon walls and the silhouettes of the hoodoo formations.
