Riding Mountain National Park rises sharply from the Manitoba plain along the Manitoba Escarpment, protecting a plateau of mixed boreal and transitional forest above the agricultural lowlands. The park supports a large, habituated elk herd often visible from roads, a recovering bison population managed in a fenced enclosure, and black bears. Clear Lake at the park's north end provides warm water swimming and boating within view of the escarpment's forested ridge.
