Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve at the southern tip of the Avalon Peninsula contains one of the most accessible seabird colonies in North America. The short trail from the interpretive centre leads directly to Bird Rock, a sea stack separated by only a few metres of cliff where Northern Gannets nest at arm's length alongside Common Murres and Black-legged Kittiwakes. The reserve hosts over 24,000 pairs of gannets during the nesting season from April to August.
