Signal Hill rises steeply above the narrows of St. John's Harbour and served as the strategic point where Guglielmo Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless signal in 1901. Cabot Tower, a castellated stone structure at the summit, was built in 1897 to commemorate the four-hundredth anniversary of John Cabot's landfall. The hill commands panoramic views of the city, the harbour, and the open North Atlantic.
