Straddling the boundary between Banff and Jasper national parks, the Columbia Icefield is one of the largest accumulation centres of ice and snow in North America outside the polar regions. The Athabasca Glacier, one of its outlet tongues, descends to within walking distance of the Icefields Parkway. Interpretive markers trace the glacier's significant retreat over the past century.
