In a burst of construction around 970–980 CE, Denmark's Jelling kings threw up a network of perfectly circular fortresses: Trelleborg, Aggersborg, Fyrkat, Nonnebakken and Borgring. Built to one geometric template yet fitted cleverly to local terrain near key land and sea routes, the five strongholds testify to the muscle of a centralizing Viking state in the late 10th century. UNESCO inscribed the ring fortresses as a serial World Heritage Site in 2023.
