Ilulissat Icefjord

Nowhere does Greenland's ice cap meet the ocean more dramatically than at Ilulissat, 250 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, where the glacier Sermeq Kujalleq discharges into a fjord jammed with colossal icebergs. Among the fastest-moving glaciers anywhere, it sheds around 35 cubic kilometres of ice a year, and two and a half centuries of observation here have shaped the science of glaciology and climate change. The icefjord became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.
