Nantucket is a small island thirty miles south of Cape Cod whose downtown historic district contains the largest concentration of pre-Civil War architecture in the United States, much of it dating from the island's peak as the global center of the whaling industry in the early nineteenth century. The town's cobblestone streets, grey-shingled Federal houses, and the 1746 Old Mill have been protected under strict architectural guidelines for decades. The moors and heathlands in the interior of the island bloom with heather in late summer.
