Martha's Vineyard is an island off the coast of Cape Cod accessible by ferry from Woods Hole, measuring roughly twenty miles east to west. The island contains several distinct communities, from the Victorian gingerbread cottages of Oak Bluffs to the working fishing town of Menemsha and the moraine highlands of Chilmark. The Gay Head Light at Aquinnah stands atop 150-foot polychrome clay cliffs that shift color from red to white to gray and represent a site sacred to the Wampanoag Tribe.
