Guarding the narrow strait between Denmark and Sweden, Kronborg Castle at Helsingør controlled shipping into the Baltic and collected the Sound dues that enriched the Danish crown. Construction of the Renaissance castle began in 1574, and its bastions were strengthened in the late 17th century; literature knows it better as Elsinore, where Shakespeare set Hamlet. Kronborg's blend of symbolic power and military muscle earned UNESCO World Heritage inscription in 2000.
