Brick Gothic architecture in northern Europe traces much of its lineage to Roskilde, where Scandinavia's first Gothic cathedral in brick rose during the 12th and 13th centuries. Danish monarchs have been buried here since the 15th century, and the porches and chapels added around the royal tombs — right up to the 19th century — turned the building into a compendium of European church architecture. UNESCO inscribed Roskilde Cathedral on the World Heritage List in 1995.
