A small desert town in the high lava plains of central Idaho near the gateway to Craters of the Moon National Monument and the site of the first city in the world powered entirely by nuclear energy, achieved for one hour in 1955 at the Experimental Breeder Reactor I facility at the Idaho National Laboratory. The EBR-I site is now a national historic landmark open to visitors with displays of early reactor hardware and nuclear history exhibits. The town serves as a staging point for exploration of the surrounding volcanic landscape.
