A vast lava field in south-central Idaho preserving a landscape of spatter cones, lava tubes, and basaltic flows from volcanic eruptions as recent as 2,000 years ago. The 7-mile Loop Road passes major cinder cone clusters, lava tube caves open to visitors, and fields of obsidian and pahoehoe lava. The landscape strongly resembles the lunar surface, which is reflected in its name and led NASA to use the site for early astronaut geology training. The monument contains one of the best-preserved examples of a Great Rift eruption zone on Earth.
