Big Sur is a rugged 90-mile stretch of California coastline between Carmel-by-the-Sea and San Simeon where the Santa Lucia Mountains plunge into the Pacific. The narrow corridor of Highway 1 winds along cliffs, redwood canyons, and headlands that are among the most scenic driving routes in North America. State parks throughout the region preserve ancient redwoods and provide access to coves, sea stacks, and coastal bluffs.
