New Zealand's third-largest island lies 30 kilometres south of the South Island across Foveaux Strait and is 85 percent covered by Rakiura National Park. The island has a permanent population of approximately 400 people and is among the best locations in New Zealand for reliable kiwi sightings at dusk and dawn on the beach near Oban township. The aurora australis is regularly visible from clear southern-sky positions on the island.
