Located on the Waikato River just north of Taupo, Huka Falls is the point where the full volume of New Zealand's largest river is funnelled through a narrow 15-metre-wide volcanic rock channel before dropping 11 metres into a surging turquoise pool. The volume of water passing through — approximately 220,000 litres per second — combined with the chalky blue colour produced by fine volcanic sediment creates an unusually powerful visual impression for a waterfall of modest height.
