A continuous stretch of uninterrupted coastline along the western side of the Northland Peninsula, Ninety Mile Beach actually extends approximately 88 kilometres and is classified as a state highway, though standard rental cars are prohibited from driving on the sand due to tidal risk. The beach provides access to the Te Paki sand dunes at its northern end and is renowned for toheroa shellfish gathering and surfcasting. Its isolation and scale distinguish it from most other New Zealand beaches.
