Rebuilt almost entirely after a devastating earthquake in 1931, Napier is widely regarded as one of the best-preserved art deco cities in the world. The central business district was reconstructed within two years in the art deco and Spanish Mission styles fashionable at the time, resulting in a concentrated streetscape of period architecture now protected by the Art Deco Trust. The surrounding Hawke's Bay wine region produces Bordeaux-style reds and chardonnay.
