The largest remaining tract of kauri forest in New Zealand, Waipoua Forest in Northland contains Tāne Mahuta, the largest living kauri tree in the country, which stands 51.5 metres tall with a girth of nearly 14 metres and is estimated to be between 1,250 and 2,500 years old. The forest also contains Te Matua Ngahere, the widest-girthed kauri. Nocturnal guided tours offer encounters with kiwi in their natural habitat.
