The northernmost tip of the North Island accessible by road, Cape Reinga is a spiritually significant location in Māori tradition, regarded as the point from which the spirits of the dead depart on their journey to the ancestral homeland of Hawaiki. A 9-metre lighthouse stands on the rocky headland where the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean converge, creating turbulent meeting waters visible below the cliff. Ninety Mile Beach, accessible from the south, leads along the entire western coastline to the cape.
