At the northern end of the Southern Alps, Nelson Lakes National Park contains two glacially carved lakes — Rotoiti and Rotoroa — surrounded by beech forest and rocky peaks. The park marks the northern terminus of the Southern Alps and is one of the quieter national parks in New Zealand, popular for multi-day tramping, trout fishing, and kayaking. The Travers-Sabine Circuit is a classic four-to-six day backcountry tramp through beech-covered valleys.
