Centred on the Whanganui River, the third-longest river in New Zealand, this national park encompasses heavily forested gorges and the only river in New Zealand to hold legal personhood. The Whanganui Journey, one of New Zealand's Great Walks, traverses the river by canoe or kayak across five days through largely roadless wilderness. Several historic Māori villages and a 1920s art-deco bridge punctuate the river route.
