A sheltered bay in the far north of New Zealand containing approximately 144 islands, islets, and cays, the Bay of Islands is a historically and ecologically significant area where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840. The warm subtropical waters support sailing, dolphin-watching cruises, snorkelling, and deep-sea fishing. The historic town of Russell, the first European settlement of significance in New Zealand, sits on the western shore of the bay.
