A limestone cave system in the Waikato region, the Waitomo Glowworm Caves are home to Arachnocampa luminosa, a bioluminescent fungus gnat larva found only in New Zealand. The underground boat tour passes beneath a cathedral-like cavern ceiling studded with thousands of glowing blue-green points of light. The cave complex also includes impressive stalactite and stalagmite formations developed over approximately thirty million years.
