The fourth-largest lake in New Zealand, Lake Wānaka sits at 278 metres above sea level in the heart of the Southern Alps. Its most recognised image is the lone willow tree growing from the shallows near the town foreshore, which is particularly striking during autumn when the surrounding hillsides turn amber and gold. The town of Wānaka provides access to skiing, hiking, and water sports.
