A fiord carved by glacial action on the southwestern coast of South Island, Milford Sound is flanked by sheer granite walls rising more than 1,200 metres from sea level. Mitre Peak, the fiord's most photographed feature, is best captured in early morning when mist softens the reflections on still water. Rainfall feeds dozens of temporary waterfalls that cascade directly into the saltwater fiord.
