On a hill called Zelená Hora above Žďár nad Sázavou stands one of Europe's strangest and most compelling churches. Jan Blažej Santini designed this pilgrimage sanctuary of St John of Nepomuk on a five-pointed star plan in the early 18th century, fusing Gothic verticality with Baroque invention into a style entirely his own. The church's radical geometry, built around the symbolism of the saint's five stars, earned it UNESCO World Heritage inscription in 1994.
